Welcome back to Memory Jog. Writing these, going back and looking at old posts, has been more uncomfortable for me than I initially anticipated. I don’t consider myself to be particularly tortured about my past, but I don’t often look back either. There’s the memory I have of my former self and there’s the performance of my former self for the Internet; neither is “the truth,” but they combine to make up some formulation of who I was at that time.
I’ve been wanting to look at my Tumblr for this series. It was such a formative platform for me in my early 20s. I had a hard time deciding on a singular post to focus on, mostly because my use of the platform was less diaristic and a little more scattered. Instead, I’ve decided to focus on posts made within a specific year, to get a better understanding of what was happening in my life, as told through my Tumblr output. We’re starting at the beginning: 2009.
